Options for wireless adapter on Dell Inspiron 1721? Can I use external adapter or a different internal one?

Spent 1 hour on phone with tech support yesterday and they said to reinstall my operating system to get wireless card working, but this is not an option. The light for the card no longer goes on and there’s no longer a wireless connection but all else works fine including ethernet. Can I use an external wireless adapter on this machine? Or perhaps a DIFFERENT internal adapter card in the same slot? THANKS for any assistance!!!!
